Day 9. I thought I woke up early enough to watch Andre de Grasse run. Alas, I missed it by probably 10 minutes. Oh well. I'm sure they'll rerun it 10,000 times today.
It's the start of the gymnastics apparatus finals (I'm watching the men's floor as I type this). Which continue for a few more days. And lots more Track & Field. Here's the standings as of this morning:

It was a week ago the Olympics started in earnest. So much has happened since then. Sadly, today marks the end of the swimming events. I have to say, I really enjoyed the 4x100m Mixed Relay and I hope that's something they can carry forward. It was really fun to watch and a lot of strategy goes into where you put the men vs. the women. And because it's mixed, you have no idea who's going to win until the last leg.
The track & field events have started in earnest as well. Early this morning, the Jamaican women sweeped the 100m medals - they really were incredible to watch. All of them were so fast and absolutely deserved their medals! They also had a 4x200m Mixed Relay, which was fun but not nearly as enjoyable as the swimming I don't think. Here's the medal standings as of noon today: wonDay 7 already! I can't believe it's been a week since the opening ceremony. It seems like it was only a couple of days ago.
It's been a great 7 days for the female competitors in Canada - all 11 medals so far have been won by women. But the track & field started yesterday so we have high hopes for Andre de Grasse. Will another man be able to beat him to become the first male medal winner for Canada? We shall see. (Sports related but not Olympics - the Toronto Blue Jays are playing their first game in Toronto in 670 days today! The whole city is buzzing! Buffalo was a great substitute but it's not the same.) On to the medal standings: Day 6 already! So much happening in Olympics world, however most of it is overnight. (I'm completely distracted right now because they're playing the steel drums on my morning show and I just want to get up and dance!)
A lot happened during the Olympics yesterday but I don't remember any big news so this intro is going to be very short. Medal standings: Welcome to Day 5 my fellow Olympaholics!
What a day yesterday! Katie Ledecky winning Gold in the first ever 1500m - incredible! Penny Oleksiak winning her 6th ever medal at the Olympics! The big news from yesterday was Simone Biles pulling out of the team final in Gymnastics and now the all-around due to mental health reasons. Personally, I applaud her for being so honest about the reasons and for recognizing that if she continued she would put herself in danger and hinder her team. I'm hoping that this will be a trend for the future for athletes - that they don't push themselves through but recognize when they just need to take a mental health break. Enough preaching from me. On to chatting! Welcome to Day 4 in Tokyo!
Incredible day yesterday in Japan! Bermuda got their first Gold in Triathalon - which was well deserved and fun to watch. A 13 year old Japanese girl won the Gold in Street Skateboarding. Canada continues to do well in the swimming events (go Canadian women!!) and the US won a lot of medals (as they do because they have some of the best athletes around). Here's hoping for another fantastic day at the Olympics! Standings as of 8am today: Hey everyone!
Welcome to Day 3 of the Olympics! It's been off to a great start! The weather is not quite what people wanted because it's HOT in Japan right now. And the humidity is off the charts from what I hear. I don't envy those athletes. Everyone who participates is a winner - given all the odds stacked against them over the past couple of years. Also, I swear at some point I'm going to get confused and think we're still in 2020. Between all the signage (not that I blame them for that) and the commentators still referring to this Olympics as 2020, it's going to be hard to remember that it's actually 2021! (And I know the logics of it. They want to keep the numbering system - it's still confusing!) Here's the standings as of 8am this morning: Hello Olympic Fans, We had a fun first day of competition. Anyone ready for Day 2? According to Zap2It, This is what is on tap for Sunday's Prime Time: Coverage of swimming finals (women's 100m butterfly, men's 100m breaststroke, women's 400m freestyle, men's 4x100 freestyle relay), women's gymnastics (team competition), triathlon (men's final), and skateboarding (women's street qualifying). I know last time, I was in the habit of posting "headlines" of achievements here in the heading. I don't think I really have the time for all that this season. So instead, how about we make this not just a place to real time chat today, but a place for people to day after chat time chat yesterday, if they so choose. **Whimsicali, please feel free to jump into this heading to add commentary if you would like to. Let the Olympic Games Chatting Begin!! Hello Olympic Games Fans, The official DAY 1 of competition. Not really much to report so far. In fact, I haven't seen one bit of the actual competition. However, I will be home all day so will be around and checking in. Let the Games Chatting begin! Hello Fans of The Olympic Games! Tonight marks the Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Olympic Games... in 2021. Traditionally, we have had some real enthusiasm for The Games on these boards so I want to make sure we have a "safe" place to chat each day without worrying about spoilers. There will be a Daily Chat specifically for today's events. Since a lot of people may do their chatting in "real time", there is no way to guard against spoilers. My only advice will be to not come to the Daily Olympic page until AFTER you have seen all that is important to you if you can't watch in real time with us. By "real time", I mean during the evening broadcast since some of us won't be able to watch during the day at all. At least not on weekdays. I plan to just not read comments from earlier in the day until AFTER I watch the evening broadcast just to make sure I don't see any spoilers. Okay... Let the GAMES begin! And yes, Whimsicali, I will take you up on the offer to contribute to the daily pages. Since I am back to full time hours for a while, any help will be much appreciated. I recall last time, I wasn't working at all and had a lot of time so I would take the time do to a big write up about yesterday's events in the heading. I don't anticipate that I'll have that kind of time this season, at least not every day. We can either keep it very simple, or if something phenomenal happens the day before, feel free to report on it in the heading if you wish. The BIG question is: Will The Olympic Games bring ConorL... and known Olympic fanatic watcher.... out of retirement? We can only hope. Who wants to Live Chat The Opening Ceremonies tonight starting at early as 7:30. Though some of us are working a watch of Survivor South Africa in first.......it might be 9:30 or so before we make it here but I will probably have it on in the background since I'm sure others in the house will be wanting to watch this. |
