Special Event/Holiday

Hello RTV people! Time once again to dedicate a page to Christmas fun! A fantastic quote from one of the greatest authors of all time who gave us the time-honored story of "A Christmas Carol". One of my favorites. Every year I do a Holiday page designed to give each other well wishes and greetings for the season, of course. But it's also to share our favorite things.... "These are a few of my favorite things" (HEY! Maybe THIS line is the reason "The Sound of Music" is considered a Christmas movie). Nice try, but... no. Anyway, I have a lot of favorites in the way of movies and music and books. I was reminded this week of a song/book that was made into a movie a few years back that always makes me emotional... but in a good way. And a sad way. It's the tale of a little boy who wanted nothing more than to give his mother something special for Christmas: a pair of shoes. If that doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you have no heart. The movie, which stars Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams, brought this song to life in a beautiful way. The synopsis from IMDb reads: "A young boy tries to get a pair of Christmas shoes for his dying mother, while a lawyer tries to deal with the break-up of his marriage. Two separate stories mesh - in the first, a young music teacher, Maggie Andrews, begins dying of a heart condition and her son Nathan tries to get a pair of Christmas shoes for her before she dies. In the second, lawyer Robert Layton and his wife Kate are slowly drifting apart and the matter comes to a head during Christmas when Kate takes over for Maggie for the school choir and declines a job in Robert's firm. When Robert's mother passes away, he begins to reconsider things and his and Nathan's paths cross on Christmas Eve as Nathan tries to raise the money for the shoes and Robert tries to get a present for his daughter." Beautiful story which, I warn you, will make you cry unless your heart is made of stone. But so worth the watch. Let's lighten the mood with one of my all time favorite goofy songs done by a cappella group "Straight No Chaser". I'm sure I'll have more to contribute in the comments as the week goes on. Also, come Saturday next week, I'll be posting the New Years Eve page which will include commentary on great TV moments (I can think of a couple) for the year 2022. Be thinking about what you'd like to contribute to that list. Merry Christmas!

Hello RTV people... ... and anyone else who wanders in. Welcome to the "Holiday" page. This is our go-to page for Holiday fun - be it a special memory you wish to share; a funny story; a favorite song or video clip; a favorite movie. This can even extend to recipes, or favorite traditions you share with your own family. The choice is really yours. This tradition of ours dates back to the early days of this site (back in the good old Disqus-free site days). It's amazing to me how long we have actually been doing this site. What has it been? Seven... eight... ten years? You know, I'm not really sure. It has been a long time, I know that. People have come and gone, of course. But there are some who have been dedicated since day one - and for those people, a true and heartfelt thank you. I got a head start yesterday on favorite songs, etc. I could probably come up with a bunch. I have so many I love, it's hard to choose. Steven Curtis Chapman has long been a favorite Christian music artist for me. Perhaps my best-loved song of his is this original (included on one of his Christmas albums years ago). It's a nice reminder of keeping the love of family (and all those closest to you) as more important than the "stuff" that comes with the season. I love how you see a glimpse of that old story "The Gift of the Magi" in this video. Anyone remember that famous O'Henry tale? Watch this to see the story. A poor couple, Jim and Della, each sell their most prized possession to give the other a meaningful Christmas gift. Lovely version of the story. Of course, at this time of year, my best is always "The Chosen". Here is a link to wonderful Christmas music included in "The Chosen: Messengers". All familiar songs, performed on set of "The Chosen". Enjoy.... Now it's your turn. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas week. MERRY CHRISTMAS! Hello RTV people, Welcome to our first official "Holiday Page" here on the new Weebly site. Traditionally, this page has been the place to share holiday fun: favorite holiday clips from a TV show or movie; favorite song; favorite story from your childhood; favorite holiday recipe. Christmas is MY favorite time of year. But it CAN be a bit stressful if you forget to remember the reason why we celebrate - which is so easy to do in the hustle and bustle of the season. So I love the holiday shows that remind me of these reasons. For example: Charlie Brown, whose sweet character Linus goes out of his way to remind us what Christmas is all about. One of my all time favorite Christmas Songs is "Mary Did You Know". Did YOU know it was written in 1984 (music written in 1991 by Buddy Green) by this man, Mark Lowry (a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, a Christian music group). But since then, the song has been covered a million times by people from all genres. From the original recording of Michael English in 1991 to Clay Aiken to Kenny Rogers to Cee Lo Green to "American Idol" alums David Archeletta and Danny Gokey ..... ...to most recently, Pentatonix, who turns everything they do to gold. Such beautiful harmonies. Why do I love this song so much? Because it beautifully expresses the reason why we take the time every year to remember and to celebrate Christmas. A celebration of the birth of Jesus "who is and was and is to come" (Revelation 1:4). Thank you Mark Lowry for the gift of this wonderful song that has become a Christmas season favorite across all genres of music. Moving on to something more humorous... I cannot get through one of these pages without wanting to remind you all of Straight No Chaser's version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas". and their Christmas Can Can.... These guys are hilarious. Now it's YOUR turn! If you have any Holiday wishes you'd like to share, this is the place to do it! Can't wait to see what you all come up with. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends. Hope you all have a wonderful and joyous Holiday season! |
