Hello Survivor fans, We are a week and a half away from the two-hour premiere of Survivor 42. Yeah, the ending of Survivor 41 left me a bit cold; hoping this new cast can change my feelings (the Australian version sure is giving me a fun ride right now). We have the promise of a new season of the South African version come summer. And perhaps even a SECOND Aussie series (I'm assuming this since the one we are currently watching is months earlier than normal). But before we go all international, we must wade our way through a new US version. And... the "Come On In GUYS!" will remain up top (yes, they have stopped doing this is Australia too). Maybe forever. So just who IS in this new cast? I'm sure you have all already dived in and met them all. But since I am just now getting around to this... how about you all walk through meeting them again with me? I'm getting my info from Dalton Ross, my go-to guy for Survivor news (though "Inside Survivor" is also a great place to get news). So, here we go.... Johnathan Young 29-year old from Alabama, a beach service company owner. That might make one think he is quite prepared for Survivor in terms of swimming and water challenges. Interesting tidbits about Johnathan from my quick scan of his profile: He has a pet peeve about wearing shirts. So, I guess we can expect to see him shirtless a lot. His claim to fame is his fantastic rendition of "A Part of Your World". Wonder if we will get to hear this - I'd love to. And Lex Luthor is his "spiritual mentor". Okay... that's what I read on first glance and thought "How odd. Is that not Superman's nemesis?" So I read it again. Nope, not THAT Lex. Another Lex - Lex Luger. No idea who that is (a famous WWE wrestler). He fashions himself an "Ozzy". Okay, we will see how he measures up. Marya Sharron A 47-year-old stay-at-home mom from Lansing, Michigan. Loves gardening and poetry (both essential things to know well for the game of Survivor hee hee) Hates when people sneeze without covering their nose (we all hate that, or we should). She plans to play her game with a mix of Angelina and Tony. Interesting combination. There has to be a joke in there somewhere. I'll leave it to WM to find it (She will build a spy shack that requires a three-hundred foot ladder to reach? She will try to negotiate for an evicted player's jacket in llama-speak?) Romeo Escabar A 37-year-old pageant coach from Los Angeles, CA. He says he's competitive, smart (strategic?), and... a bit impatient (better watch that. Survivor is a better game played with patience). He also claims to be likable and social, and he says he hates laziness (which would indicate a hard worker). The perfect Survivor player? That's who he's describing. He says he always accomplishes his goals and since winning Survivor is his goal, the rest of them are on notice, right? He has multiple former players he wants to be like (lest we forget, his ambition is to make Survivor history) so that his name will never be forgotten. Like a Cirie, or a Boston Rob, or a Rob Cesternino. Big shoes to fill, Romeo. We will see if you live up to all that. Tori Meehan A 25-year-old therapist from Tulsa, Oklahoma (though currently living in Rogers, Arkansas). She is a Christian... a devout one, which makes me smile. She paid her way through college doing pageants (seems we have pageant coach and a pageant participant in the same season). She fancies herself a Kim Spradlin but what I'm reading sounds more like a cross between Lisa Welchel (devout Christian) and Denise Stapely (a little munchkin of muscle). She seems like a confident, lovely young woman. But will she deliver a Survivor game worthy of a win? Jackson Fox A 48-year-old health care worker from Pasadena, Texas. Likes puzzles... so put him front and center for all those competitions. Loves and respects his mom and her great faith (seems she is no longer with him). Awww. He wants to play a game similar to Elaine! Ya'll remember Elaine, right (a busted can of biscuits)? Well, who wouldn't? She was a stand-out on "Island of the Idols". Chanelle Howell A 29-year-old executive recruiter from New York. Competitive superfan who hates slow walkers. "It's the New Yorker in me". Another Kim Spradlin fan. Interesting... she specifically says she wants to show Black and Brown girls that Survivor was made for them too - but then she calls out Kim as her favorite. And not... VECEPIA. A Black woman who actually WON the game of Survivor. Oh, and Natalie Anderson! Also a winner! She says she's a student of the game who has studied it - but does her knowledge extend back to season four and season twenty-nine, I wonder? All that aside (and certainly meaning no disrespect at all) Chanelle has an impressive bio. I have a good feeling about her. She might be one to watch. Omar Zaheer A 31-year-old veterinarian from Ontario, Canada! ONTARIO! They'll let ANYONE play this game these days (#HeeHeeHee). Just kidding. Nice to see Canadians included again. Though someone might need to tell me just what Settlers of Catan is (online board game). Video game, maybe? He describes himself as silly, empathetic and shameless. So, he's actually WindbagMark. HA HA. (Second #HeeHeeHee) Further proof: his bio is very windbaggy. Too much to read through but I must say, his list of Pet Peeves is interesting. Joey from "Friends" made the list. HA HA. Having too much fun with this. His list of players he wants to play like is also very long. Beginning with Kim Spradlin.... Hmm. Something you want to tell us, WM? (Much too young to be me. And his "Kim Spradlin" answer gives it away. Todd Herzog is the player I'd be like if I wasn't too old to be playing Survivor) Swati Goel A 19-year-old Ivy League college student from Palo Alto, CA. She seems like a fascinating one: hard-working student who loves reading, theater and SURVIVOR. (in that order, I guess). So many interesting things in that bio it's hard to pick just one. I had a good feeling about Swati... until she listed Chaos Kass as one she would like to play like. NOOO. You can do better than Chaos Kass (maybe Kaos Kass, except with likability?) Hai Giang A 29-year-old data scientist from New Orleans.. via Atlanta.. via Vietnam. His bio is coming off a bit prickly to me. But he sounds like good guy who has many wonderful accomplishments in life. I'm glad he has done well for himself and his family. Now, why Survivor: let's see.... aggressive, audacious, astute.... all the good "a" words he uses to describe himself (but will he also be that "a" word that rhymes wth "glass bowl"? And he likes "a" player Aubry. So do I, Hai. Lindsay Dolashewich A 32-year-old dietician from Asbury Park in NJ. Loud and talkative. Will the beach be big enough for her and her tribe? Seriously, this bio would indicate a HUGE personality, but she does seem physically strong and competitive. I hope this gregarious, outgoing woman is also likable or she could get annoying fast. She wants to play like Lauren Beck. Now, if Lauren is who I remember her being, that's good... just don't wait TOO long to make a move, like Lauren did. Someone tell me if Lauren is the Lauren I'm thinking of (you are indeed). Mike Turner A 58-year-old retired firefighter from Hoboken, NJ. Why, when I look at him, do I think of Philip "pink underwear" Shepherd? Perhaps the presence of pink flamingos on his shorts. Loyal, loud, but fair, he says. OH... me too on his pet peeve: kids (when they were younger in my house) tearing open cereal boxes and leaving them open! I solved that by not buying cereal anymore! Reading through his bio, he really seems like a nice fellow. Hope he does well. Lydia Meredith A 22-year-old waitress from Santa Monica, CA. Fun personality, maybe? Comedy writer, if I'm reading that right. Funny, spontaneous and loyal. She might be a lot of joy. But Crazy Debbie came up in her list of who she might play like. Not sure I'd want to admit THAT out loud. Rocksroy Bailey A 44-year-old stay-at-home dad from Brooklyn. Hmm. If you are playing Survivor, who's watching the KIDS? Just kidding. He is actually an environmental scientist from Jamaica. Sounds like a great husband and dad. He thinks he will have a game somewhat like John Cochran. Interesting choice. Jenny Kim A 43-year-old creative director from New York. An artist, I think. Who also knows how to make things out of metal? And teaches Pilates. Quite a well-rounded lady who picked her husband as her hero. Aww. Love that. She likes the games of Kelly Wentworth and Lauren Beck and says she is very good at reading people. Daniel Strunk A 30 year old law clerk from New Haven, Connecticut. Also, a cancer survivor. Plans to channel his inner Fabio to start to make himself less threatening. And then kick into gear to play games like those of Yul and Todd. Oh.. he's a bit "old school". Interesting. Because "old school" worked so well on Winners@War, didn't it? Maryanne Oketch A 24-year-old seminary student from Ontario, Canada (second Canuck). That's interesting. Also, her mother is her hero and is also from Kenya. She says she is a great listener but that she also talks a lot: "Just because you talk a lot doesn't mean you aren't listening". We'll see. Heh. She likes Davie. Aw, I remember Davie. Because he always seemed to be having so much fun. That's cute. Zach Wurtenburger A 22-year-old student from Florida but living in St. Louis, MO. He is also a sketch comedy writer, so something in common with the other college student. He likes social strategy games; that could come in handy here. Really looks up to Ethan Zohn as one of the first Jewish TV personalities he'd become aware of. Loves the game of Todd, and that's who he wants to play like. Drea Wheeler A 35-year-old fitness consultant living in San Antonio but born in Montreal (like me!). A third Canadian. Potential challenge beast: not just a fitness consultant but also an All-American track runner. She sees herself as a good "manipulator"... hope she has a good social game to go along with that. She also would like to play a game like Kelly Wentworth. That is our cast. Here is a link to the EW article, if you are interested. Inside that, you can find a bunch of teaser articles. I haven't yet made my way through those. Maybe tomorrow. Show begins not THIS Wednesday, but NEXT Wednesday, March 9th. The premier is two hours, from 8 to 10 pm. So tell me? What do you all think of this cast?
